Where do your eggs come from?

What? I found a really cool app in the appstore! It is called Eicode, eggcode in English. What you can do with it is scanning a special code on the package of the eggs and then the app can tell you, the consumer, from which farm the eggs come from and which kind of chickens made these eggs. It also gives you information about if, and how the farm is certificated. All companies who join the IKB Ei are registered in this app. IKB Ei is a quality care system for production of eggs. This system covers all stations which are involved in the egg production. With this, companies provide guarantees on the method they product their eggs, the quality of it and the origin of the eggs. In the Netherlands eggs will only be sold in the supermarket if they have this label. With this app the poultry will create transparency. You can find the code you have to scan on the package from the eggs. For example: 2-NL-1234503 The first number shows how the chickens are housed: 0: biological 1: free range inside 2: free range in and outside The second part (NL) says from witch country they come from. and the third part is the unique code from which farm it comes from and also which stable number.

Why? I think to make the food industry more sustainable it is important that the consumer knows where their product comes from and make a choice from there, if they will buy these eggs or not. And with this app you can exactly search in a really easy way what has happened with the eggs. This app is a perfect example of creating an open world. There are no longer secrets about how chickens are treated and if the eggs you buy come from a save and fair environment. There is a need for a more fair food production among the society. For example the animal welfare has to be a lot more better, or the workers have to work in a more safe environment. This app is a tool that makes it possible to create a little of this. I am using it for a while now and I really feel better to buy safe and fair eggs instead of the bad ones. I know it costs a little more effort and also a little more money to buy these eggs, but I am sure it is worth it. And when you know which eggs to buy there is no longer effort needed. This app should have big future potential because everybody wants to have save and fair eggs I guess.
A hen(chicken that produces eggs for our consumption) are specially developed to produce as much eggs as possible. Today the chickens produce twice as much eggs as fifty years ago. One hen produces more than 300 eggs a year! I think this is absolutely abnormal. These are animals with feelings just as we have. Why do we treat these animals so bad. Are we that selfish? Just to eat a cheap egg we torture these animals. So yes, we are that selfish.
Also in politics this subject is a topic. The food system has to change, according to Martijn van Dam. The staatssecretaris van Economische zaken (state secretary of economy)called for more fairness for the farmers, transparency for the consumer and balance with nature.
Because all this is such a big topic in our society and people have a need for more transparency this app has future potential. Because thing about the egg industry are getting more clear in an easy way.
